There a good chance you’ll have heard about the controversy surrounding Denver’s urban camping ban. People are in an uproar about this, and for a good reason. There’s nothing better than camping close to America’s greatest cities.
Well never fear, because we’ve listed some of our favorite urban camping spots (spoiler alert: Denver isn’t included)
Let’s dive in!
1. Chicago Northwest KOA, Union
If you’re on the hunt for a place to take the kids this summer, consider this family-focused campground. There are tons of fun activities to do on-site.
Not to mention, this campsite is pretty close to two Metra train stations. So, in next to no time you’ll be enjoying yourselves over at the Shedd Aquarium, the Willis Tower, or any other attractions your fancy visiting in downtown Chicago.
2. Campland on the Bay, San Diego
Campers will be in for a lavish waterfront retreat alongside Mission Bay. It’s the perfect place to stay in San Diego because it’s right in the heat of things.
Not to mention, they offer a range of top-notch amenities to ensure a comfortable stay. This includes:
- A skate park
- A marina
- Bike rentals
There’s truly something for everyone to enjoy!
3. Kirby Cove Campground, Golden Gate National Recreation Area
On a clear day, you can even see Alcatraz and Fisherman’s Wharf from the recreation area.
However, if you fancy camping close to Golden Gate Bridge, you’ll have to book well in advance. There are only four sites, and you can only stay for a maximum of three nights.
As urban camping goes, it really doesn’t get much better than this.
4. Cherry Hill Park, Washington
If you want to experience urban camping and absorb the best sites D.C. has to offer, Cherry Hill is the place to be.
From this campground, you can either take public transport or one of their tour shuttles into D.C.
Alternatively, if you fancy a day trip to Annapolis or exploring the Civil War battlegrounds in Sharpsburg and Gettysburg, you can do so. These journies aren’t too far from this campsite.
Not to mention, Cherry Hill Park also offers all the following amenities:
- Two swimming pools
- An 18-hole mini golf course
- A nature trail
- A cafe (serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
5. Desert’s Edge RV Park, Phoenix
This park is best described as an oasis amidst the scorching Arizona heat. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful groves of orange trees, which not only look good, but the fruit tastes delicious!
If you’re traveling with your four-legged friend, pets are more than welcome. There are tons of dedicated runs for them to enjoy and there’s even a grooming area for pet owners to use.
Or, if you’re planning a trip with your little ones, they’re bound to have plenty of fun in the on-site playground. Alternatively, perhaps you and the family would enjoy a quick round on the putting green?
Either way, you’re bound to find something you enjoy doing together!
6. San Diego Metro KOA, San Diego
KOA is located roughly 20 minutes from San Diego and has everything to enjoy a jam-packed day full of family fun. Visitors can make good use of the:
- Climbing wall
- Laser tag
- Movies under the stars
If you get bored of the campground, head over to Downtown San Diego – there are tons of things to see and do there.

7. Tall Chief RV and Camping Resort, Fall City, Washington
Don’t let the name fool you; you don’t have to have an RV to camp here. There’s tons of space for you to pitch up in this gorgeous woodland. Alternatively, you can rent a furnished cabin or a quirky yurt.
You won’t be short of things to do here. Guests can savor a round of mini-golf, shuffleboard, or a game of volleyball.
Alternatively, if you’d prefer to chill out and relax, take a dip in the swimming pool and finish off with a session in the sauna.
8. Miami Everglades Resort, Florida
If you want to feel like you’re camping in the tropics (without having to leave the States) then you’ll love this place. When you camp here, you’ll be surrounded by palm, mango and avocado trees.
It doesn’t matter whether you plan to head over to the Everglades National Park or make the most of their on-site facilities. You’re bound to have a good time!
At Miami Everglades Resort, holidaymakers can participate in:
- Shuffleboard
- Basketball
- Horseshoes
There’s nothing better than enjoying a quick game of something to bring the family closer together!
9. Tolt MacDonald Park, Seattle
If you’re looking for a mix of country and city, then Tolt MacDonald Park won’t disappoint. With a whopping 574 acres of county park to its name, it sits at the junction of the Snoqualmie and Tolt rivers.
Visitors can relish tons of different walking and biking trails, river tubing, and not to mention spellbinding views of the Cascade Mountains.
